Tutorials: Creative music ideas
Guitar filtered stutter
Someone requested an explanation of how to get the effect from Sevendust Black, so I gave it a shot. Its not an exact copy, but it should give you good idea on how these types of guitar stutter fx can be made.
MBassador - bass enhancement
In this one I'm just showing you how I use MBassador to enhance the bass on various insturments. I use this fairly often, so I thought I'd go over how I use it and what it can do.
Reduce frequency masking with MAutoDynamicEQ
In this one I'll show you a way to easily find clashing frequency and get rid of the masking dynamically. MAutodynamicEQ has many features that help you find and eliminate frequency masking.
Create a drum ensemble from a single drum
In this one I show you how to create a drum ensemble from a single drum. I'm using MUnison to create the effect and although there are presets included that do it, in this vid I'll show you how to set it up yourself.
Making grainclouds with MGranularMB
In this video I’ll show you a way to create ambient grain clouds with MGranularMB. I know when first used it I couldn’t figure everything out, so I hope this demystifies things.
Comb filter fun with drums using MCombMB
In this one I'm showing how you can use comb filters to add some harmony and sound to percussion. I used MCombMB for this because of its multiband functionality. This can be used as a special effect, a drone or even a way to tune a drum to your song.
MSpectralPan - new free panning plugin
This is a new plugin from MeldaProduction. This is a panning plugin with a few twists (namely its spectral).
Cinematic percussive sound design
In this tutorial I explain how to create small percussive noises using white noise and filters. I explain how to create the rhythms and then some additional tricks to add some variations to the sound. These types of sounds can often be heard in soundtracks or cinematic trailers.
Reverse reverb effect tutorial
In this one I go over how to create reverse reverb fx using impulse responses. I'm actually using a synthetic impulse response in MConvolutionMB, which lets me easily sync the reverb length to the tempo.
Fake choir sounds with MUnison
In this one I'll show you how you use MUnison to make your voice sound like a group of people singing or talking at the same time. I used 1 voice for each part in this video, but if you have the patience to record 2 parts or more for each voice you can achieve a better result.
MAutovolume quick tips
I thought I do a quick vid to show how I use MAutovolume. MAV is one of my most used plugins, but it seems many people aren't quite sure how to use it, so I decided to make this. Once you understand what it can do, its simple to set up and get the results you want.
Layering with MPowersynth
Let's talk about Laying synths using MPowersynth. Using MPS you can easily layer different sounds and mix them using EQ, compression, etc. In this video I go over how to layer a pad, percussive hit and a supersaw.
EQ automation trick
This is a quick trick on using MEqualizer easily automate different sections of your song. I've been lazy with my EQ automation, but with this trick it should help lazy people like me automate things easily and quickly.
Making plucks and pulses with MWobbler
Here is a not so quick tutorial on how to make plucks and pulses using MWobbler. I always thought MWobbler was only good for dubstep, but it's actually really veratile and can turn just about anything into a pluck with interesting rhythms. I was surprised I could making something interesting in less than 2 minutes.
Creating risers using granular synthesis
In this video I go over how to make risers using granular synthesis. I'm using MGranularMB, but I'm sure you could do the same with another granular effect plugin. In this video I just go over the basics, but of course you can/should use reverb, filters, etc.
How to simulate crowd chants
Crowd chanting can be costly and difficult to reproduce, so in this video I;ll show you a way to simulate it. If you want a smoother release use a compressor on the vocal and try adding a reverb after MUnison.
Organ sounds from your guitar
I was inspired and tried to find a way to make organ sounds with my guitar. Using rotary speaker software and a harmonics generator from Melda productions, I try to simulate the sound of classic electric organs. You can be the judge of whether I succeeded or not.
Making impulse responses using match EQ
In this video I go over how to make an Impulse response using a Match EQ (MFreeformequalizer). I also use MMultibandConvolution to create the IR file.
MPowerSynth oscillator morph
In this video I show you how to morph the oscillators in MPowersynth to creating morphing evolving sounds. It is similar to wavetables, but the technique is a bit different.
Epic Drums 1
How to design epic cinematic style drums using MPowersynth ,(although you can use any synth). This video starts with basic sound design and then goes into detail about how to apply fx and fine tune the sound. The beginning of the video gives you an idea of the type of cinematic drums made in this lesson.
Epic Drums 2
This is a continuation of my series on sound design for cinematic percussion. In this second part on drum synthesis I go over how to make deep impacts and modern cinematic sounds. Hopefully you'll get an idea on how to make an Epic drop and some ways you can manipulate that basic sound I went over in part 1.
Epic Drums 3
This is the 3rd part of my series on sound design for cinematic percussion. Here in this video I show you an easy way to layer your drums and quickly add variations. I show how to quickly add variations to timing, pitch and tone. I also show how to make a basic drum sequence.
Epic Drums 4
In part 3 of this drum synth tutorial I go over how to add these sounds to a sampler. I also talk about how we can avoid common problems such as the machine gun effect and the lack of velocity differences.
Soft ambient delays using MDelayMB
In this video I'm going to show you how to use MDelayMB to create a soft ambient delay sound. This delay has the transient removed which creates a soft warm sound that is great for anytime you need something smooth and subtle. This is just one of the many uses of the crossovers available in the Melda multiband plugins.
Rhythmic reverb using MConvolutionMB
In this one I'll show you how you can create rhythmic reverb effects using synthetic impulse responses with Melda Productions MConvolutionMB. MConvolutionMB allows you to create synthetic impulse responses based on white noise and then control their volume, tone, etc.
Multitap Delay using MDelayMB
With this video I'll show you how to turn Melda Productions MDelayMB into a multi-tap delay. Multi-tap delays are great for ambiance or rhythmic fx.
Rhythmic Delay using MDelayMB
In this video I'll show you how to create rhythmic multi-tap delay using Melda Production's MDelayMB. Its easy to create complex rhythms and textures using this technique and you can use it to add interest to boring rhythm parts.
De-essing and Plosive reduction with MAutoVolume
In this video I'll show you how you can use MAutovolume to reduce "S" sounds and plosives in vocals. Of course this same idea can be used with other instruments that have resonances or similar problems.
Ducking Reverb using MTurboReverb
In this video I'll show you how you can duck your reverb using MTurboReverb. Using MTurboReverb you can easily reduce the volume of your reverb while you're singing and then when you've stopped the volume will increase. With MTurboReverb there is no need to use another program because the functionality is already built in. Of course this can also be used as a special effect.
Tuning Drums with MFreqShifterMB
In this video I’ll show you how you can tune your drums and percussion with MFreqShifterMB. I prefer using frequency shifters to tune percussion because does less damage to the upper frequencies IMO.
Spectral Volume Balancing using MDynamicsMB
In this video I'll show you how you can balance the spectrum of your mix or individual instruments. This technique will allow you to increase/decrease the low level details in your audio and change the tone. In this video I'm using MDynamicsMB, but this can be done with any of the Melda multiband plugins.
Add life to pads with MWobbler
In this video I'll show you how to create wobbles and pluck sounds using MWobbler and then how you can morph between the sounds. You can create all sorts of useful sounds for things like future bass or any type of modern EDM.
